High Pasture Cave - Seminar: 16th June 2007

The following news contains the programme for the seminar to be held at Sabhal Mor Ostaig (Gaelic College) on Saturday 16th June 2007. Read on for more details.....


The seminar ‘Underworld: The use and function of underground places during the Atlantic Scottish Iron Age’, which is being held at Sabhal Mor Ostaig, Sleat, Skye, on Saturday 16th June 2007, is now fast approaching. Have you registered your interest for the event and booked your seat, access to which will be free?

The seminar will comprise a series of short talks from specialists working in a variety of fields relating to archaeological research, especially with regards to underground structures such as natural caves and souterrains that were used throughout the Atlantic Scottish Iron Age. Guest speakers at the event will include Jane Downes and Nick Card, co-directors of the Mine Howe & Environs Project, Orkney; Fraser Hunter from the National Museums of Scotland; Roger Miket, former Museum’s Officer for Skye & Lochalsh; Martin Carruthers (UHI), who will be talking about underground structures in Orkney; Janet Montgomery (University of Bradford), Jane Evans (Isotope Geosciences Laboratory) and Amanda Jay (University of Durham), who will be talking about isotope studies in humans and animals in the Hebrides; Laura Sinfield (University of Edinburgh), who will present details about the human remains recovered from High Pasture Cave, Skye; Carrie Drew (University of Durham), who will be talking about the mammal bones recovered from High Pasture Cave; and Steven Birch (High Pasture Cave & Environs Project), who will be presenting the latest details regarding the excavations at this site in Skye. Finally, the sessions for the seminar will be chaired by Rod McCullagh (Historic Scotland) and Anna Ritchie.
